ESSA Nationals for the second time – Saturday 17th June 2019

The Oakhyrst Grange ESSA Swimming Team (Aspen P, Lily-Mae O, Gracie B & Joseph F) travelled to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield to take part in the 25th Team Championships for Primary Schools. The team qualified from the SE Regional Finals in Guildford to compete in both Freestyle and Medley relays. All events had three heats each with 8 schools and the top 16 schools would swim again in the A (1-8) or B (9-16) final. Our first race was the Medley Relay and we were drawn in heat 1. Going into the event we were ranked sixth out of 24. All of the children swam brilliantly and came first in their heat. They finished 6th overall from the three heats to take their place in the “A” final. The children had a short break before they swam again in the final, they improved on their 6th ranking by finishing 5th overall in the country. Very well done.

With a short break, their next race was the freestyle relay, we were ranked 5th going into the event. This time we were in heat 2. The 3 heats were all very tight races, OGS came 2nd in their heat, and again qualified for the “A” final. The competition was fierce  and we finished 4th overall, a massive achievement.

Thank you to all our amazing supporters who travelled through some very nasty weather to support the team and you win the prize for the noisiest cheering!

Well done
Mrs Michelle Evans, Swimming Coach
