On Friday the 10^th May we took part in the ISA London South Athletics competition at the Excel Sports Hub in Walton. We left at 7:30am and took a steady drive down to the venue all the children were very excited for the day ahead of them. When we arrived, we got settled and all children took part in a warm up following with a full school’s parade around the big track.

The events started at 10am for all track events and 10:15 for all field events.

We took part in lots of events:

Track were 600m, 60m, 75m, 80 and 150m.

The Field event was ball throw.

After all the events had finished we sat down for lunch in the stadium seats enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Lunch time was over and we were back into the finals for all the track events which we had two students who took part in these finals Alec W from Year 4 and Vivienne L from Year 5

We ended the day on the relays which was such a fantastic finish to a great day. All teams did great and couldn’t be any prouder on how they ran as a team.

Oakhyrst found out that they had two students who had qualified for the National finals which will be hosted in Birmingham on the 17^th June.

I just want to thank Miss Dance, Mr Burke and Mr Harris for coming along to the event to help out. I truly appreciate all the support and help you gave not just to me but the children as well. I want to say a huge congratulations to all students who took part. I’m so proud of each and every one of you. You are all a credit to Oakhyrst.

On Saturday 11th May, 4 children (Scarlett K, Daniel H, Amaaya P, Jude M) took part in the South East Schools Divisional Relay Finals at Guildford Spectrum. This event was contested by schools that had qualified from the following counties: Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Isles, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

We got off to a good start in the very first event, the Small Schools 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay, where we came fourth in our heat and qualified with a PB for the final. The events moved quickly and we were soon swimming in the final. We were up against some very strong teams and came in with a time of 1:15.83.

After the excitement of the Freestyle Relay, we were then lined up for the heats of the Small Schools 4 x25m Medley Relay. We came 3rd in our heat with a time of 1.23.99 qualifying sixth overall.

Everyone swam really well and we fought hard, but missed out on a chance to represent the South East in the National English Schools final in Sheffield in June.

Well done to all our swimmers, I am super proud of you all and a big thank you to the parents for supporting the team.

The children and staff at Oakhyrst Grange would like to thank our very generous PFOG committee for donating funds to purchase a wide range of exciting books for the school library.  The books were displayed in assembly today and the children were clearly thrilled at the prospect of getting their hands on the new reading material.  A special thank you to the School Council for their initiative in making the selections and to Mrs Leyshon for coordinating everything.

Well done PFOG your help and support goes beyond words.

Just before the Easter break, Kindergarten and Lower Kindergarten entered an ISA Young Storytelling competition.

I am pleased to be able to say that Kindergarten won 1^st place in the Early Years category. Their story all about dinosaurs will now be published in a book that we will receive once completed.

Very well done to Kindergarten.

On Friday 22nd March, six Year 4 and six Year 5 children went to Caterham School for a Geography Quiz.  On the way in the minibus, some Year 4s tested each other.  When we got there we went into the hall and had some very tasty large cookies and some juice while we waited for some other teams. Yum!

Our first round was to name up to two countries on the border of the country named.  We did round 1 when we were waiting for the remaining teams. When we started round 2 we were really nervous as we thought we didn’t do very well in the first round, but miraculously in this round we got the questions all correct.  This round was super scary as it was about countries shapes.  There were countries like Japan, Chile and Italy.  Moving on to the 3rd round we had to guess the landmark that Barry (the mascot) was next to.  In this round we got one wrong.  Next round was the playdough round!!! Yes!!!  We had to make a model of the Earth! We made all the different layers on top of each other and cut it open. Round 5 was next which was biggest/smallest which was so hard.  We had to guess populations and biggest/smallest countries/islands.  One we had to do was what is the biggest continent in the world.  The penultimate round was How many …? In this round one question was how many Olympic rings are there and how many continents are there?  Round 7 was General Geography Knowledge.  This round was also quite hard as we had to think right back to our first Year 3 topic.  Most of these we got right.

Year 4 came third and Year 5 came second.  Caterham Prep came first.  After we did so well in the quiz, one of the Year 4s said “I was shocked with surprise and was very happy”.  I wonder if we will go again next year?
