Year 5 have been very busy lately with their cricket, having competed in 2 fixtures over the last week. Below is a quick summary of each fixtures.

Essendene Lodge – 11th June
All of the Year 5 children participated in some friendly matches against our local friends, Essendene Lodge School. Being split into two teams, each team got to compete against our opponents in a 10-over match. For a lot of our children, this was their first experience of a cricket fixture, but they soon picked up the format and adapted brilliantly. All the teams batted brilliantly, hitting plenty of 4s and 6s along the way. There was some excellent bowling being shown and most impressively some outstanding fielding. Essendene Lodge were narrow victors in both matches, however everyone came away smiling from having given it their best shot. Well done everyone!

Caterham competition – 20th June
6 boys from across Year 3 – 5 attended a competition run by Caterham School. It was a glorious day for cricket, with our team playing in three, five over-a-side, matches. We were up against Caterham School, Rokeby School and New Beacon School. All the teams we played were very experienced and had some very high level players on show. The format tested the teams tactical decisions and we were involved in some great games, batting really well throughout.

Although results didn’t go the teams way, all of the boys put in lots of effort and never gave up. They all got the opportunity to bat, bowl and field, showing some excellent individual performances along the way. Well done boys!

On Monday 16th June, 8 children in Year 5 took part in the ISA National Athletics Finals after qualifying through from the Regional finals in May, to represent London South. The children made their way to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, which saw athletes from Year 4-11 across England gather to compete in this prestigious event. 7 regions competed in every track & field event, with every region looking to walk away with the winners trophy.

The 8 children combined competed in 6 different events, with their results listed below:

Year 5 Boys 75m Final – Alec W finished in 4th position.
Year 5 Boys 600m Final – Alec W finished in 2nd position, winning a silver medal.
Year 5 Girls 600m Final – Bonnie B finished in 8th position.
Year 5 Girls Vortex Throw Final – Bonnie B finished in 4th position.
Year 5 Boys 4x100m relay Final – Alec, Caiden, Jaimin & Charlie finished in 5th position.
Year 5 Girls 4x100m relay Final – Sienna, Bonnie, Hetty & Sofia finished in 6th position.

For a lot of the children, it was a long way to travel for one race. However they fully embraced the competition, atmosphere and occasion to perform out of their skin and do me and their parents proud.

The children were also lucky enough to meet former GB Olympian, Alex Bell, who presented the medals to every competitor and kindly took photos with our children. A lovely memento to take away from the day.

Well done to all the children involved. It was a huge achievement to reach the National Finals in the first place. Thank you also to the parents who so kindly drove up to support our team.

On Monday 9^th June, 10 of our Year 5 & 6 girls had a fantastic opportunity of attending a Tag Rugby competition hosted by Harlequins. The minibus journey was in full flow with lots of excitement, and this was further enhanced by arrival at ‘The Stoop’, the home of Harlequins Rugby Club.

Before play started, the girls got the opportunity to take lots of photos in the stadium, on the pitch, with the mascot, as well as walk out of the tunnel to their chosen song ‘Free from Desire’ as they were paraded with flags and cheers. A lovely moment for all the girls.

As the competition started, the team were scheduled to play 6 tag rugby matches. Each match they improved, worked as a team and got tactically better.  Amazingly, the team won all 6 of their matches, making them overall winners of the competition.  A truly brilliant effort and one which they should all be really proud of.  Special mention to Vivienne who was voted as Player of the Day by Harlequins staff, after scoring numerous tries throughout the day.

The girls were really buzzing after the event, and they are looking forward to taking part in more Tag Rugby lessons & competitions moving forward.

The much-anticipated Oakhyrst Grange Sports Day 2025 was a resounding success, bringing together children, teachers, and parents on what was a wondering afternoon. The event was helped by ideal weather conditions; enough for parents to get their picnic blankets out and watch their children race.

The afternoon kicked off with a procession by all children from all year groups, each serenading their own country flag in time with their respective National anthems. Mrs Dance (DJ Dance) then got the Macarena going with everyone participating in the famous dance to get our afternoon underway.

Each class then took it in turns to complete their respective sprint races, all of which were very, very close. Medals were awarded to the top 3 boys & girls from each class. Luckily video technology was available on the finish line as some of the races were so hard to call. Between the sprint races, children were called up to receive medals for the long jump, beanbag throw and Javelin throw events which had taken place prior to sports day.

The second half of sports day saw each class compete in a ‘novelty race’. Although they were fun events, they were all still very important as they still rewarded teams will points towards their final total. We had novelty races such as dressing up race (Year 6), Circle race (KG & Year 1) and hockey dribble (Year 4).

After all the points from sprints, novelty races and field events were collated, it was time to announce the winners. This years Sports Day winners were… Stanstead House!!! Congratulations to everyone involved!!

The day concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Mr Gear on what was his last sports day at Oakhyrst Grange. I would like to thank him for all his efforts and support during sports days during his time at OGS, and for him to know that he is always welcome back as a guest appearance!

Last Wednesday, we invited our Years 5 & 6 parents to attend our Parent/Child Sports festival, where families came together to work competitively with each other.

The festival ran with 8 teams competing against each other to score the most amount of points. The teams competed across eight cricket & athletics activities designed to test both skill and cooperation. From relay races and target bowling to catching challenges and Javelin, each activity tested what the children have been learning during Games lessons this term.

The activities were played in excellent spirits, with cheers echoing throughout the afternoon. The mix of generations brought out both playful competitiveness and heart-warming teamwork. Team Sofia emerged as the overall winners much to the delight of both the children and adults involved!

Congratulations to Team Sofia, and a big thank you to all the parents who made the festival a resounding success. Here’s to more memorable moments in future editions!

A group of our Years 3 & 4 pupils recently took part in an exciting cricket match against Chinthurst School, with many of the children experiencing the sport competitively for the first time. The team showed great enthusiasm and enjoyed the opportunity.
There were some impressive moments throughout, one of which being our bowling, with several children bowling accurately and with control taking regular wickets along the way. The batting was equally promising, with Jude & Thomas scoring some early runs to get the run chase well underway. There were some more confident strikes and with some better alertness between the wickets, the score could have been greater. The team worked hard to support each other throughout the match, showing excellent teamwork and sportsmanship.

Although the result didn’t go our way, the team competed well. It was a fantastic learning experience and a great introduction to cricket for our Year 3&4 children.

On Friday 16^th May, 17 enthusiastic and talented athletes from Years 4&5 represented Oakhyrst Grange at the ISA London South Athletics competition, hosted by Weston Green School at the Excel Athletics Centre. They were competing against 20 other schools in what was a fantastic day of competition. All of our children gave it their absolute best and performed brilliantly across a wide range of events, showing determination, teamwork, and great sportsmanship throughout.

Miss Lomax and I are incredibly proud of all our children, with several achieving outstanding results and securing places at the National Finals in Birmingham in June. Our medallists are as follows:

Track Events

• 600m Year 5 Boys – Alec W: 1st place (Qualified for Nationals)
• 600m Year 5 Girls – Bonnie B: 1st place (Qualified for Nationals)
• 75m Year 5 Boys – Alec W: 1st place (Qualified for Nationals)
• 75m Year 5 Girls – Sofia C: 5th overall
• 150m Year 5 Girls – Sienna O: 5th overall
• 4x100m Year 5 Girls – 1st place (Qualified for Nationals)

A huge well done to all of our athletes – your efforts and achievements were exceptional! Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support us too. We look forward to seeing our qualifiers shine at the National Finals in Birmingham.

Mrs Alison Dawson, our much loved LAMDA teacher will be leaving us at the end term. She popped into school today to pass over the certificates for this term’s students, all 28 of whom passed with distinction.  The children will be presented with their certificates in our Giving Out assembly next week.

Mrs Dawson has worked with us at the school for the last 15 years and was in fact one of my earliest appointments. What a good choice I made. Well done Mrs Dawson enjoy a very happy retirement.

On Saturday 10th May, 4 children (Alec W, Amaaya P, Caiden H, Daniel H) took part in the South East Schools Divisional Relay Finals at Guildford Spectrum. This event was contested by schools that had qualified from the following counties: Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Isles, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

We got off to a solid start in the very first event, the Small Schools 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay, where we came sixth in our heat and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final. We came 9th out of 16 teams.

After the excitement of the Freestyle Relay, we were then lined up for the heats of the Small Schools 4 x25m Medley Relay. We came 2nd in our heat with a time of 1.20.64 qualifying sixth overall.

Everyone swam really well and we fought hard, but missed out on a chance to represent the South East in the National English Schools final in Sheffield in June.

Well done to all our swimmers, I am super proud of you all and a big thank you to the parents for supporting the team.

On Friday 9th May, a group of Year 5 children (including one Year 4 player) attending the London South ISA Cricket competition, held by Rosemead School in Dulwich. It was a day of glorious sunshine and the perfect day for some cricket!

In a competitive tournament with 9 other schools in attendance, our Oakhyrst Grange team really put up a good fight. For some children, this was their first experience of a cricket competition.

Placed in a group of 5 schools, we battled in our in 4 really close matches against Heath House, Whitehorse, Weston Green and Rosemead.

Results didn’t go in our favour however every game we improved as a team and performed really well when batting, bowling, and fielding. Two highlights of the day were 3 of our children (Bonnie, Sofia & Caiden) hitting a 6! As well as Rhian taking a wicket as the youngest member of the side.

It was a great afternoon and the children came away from it buzzing for me.
