Pre-Prep (5-7)Transition to Prep

Moving from Pre-Prep into Prep School is an exciting milestone, and at Oakhyrst Grange we ensure it is a natural, supportive and confidence-building experience.

Because our children are already part of the Oakhyrst family, the transition is seamless. They are familiar with the school environment, many of the staff, and the high expectations that encourage them to become increasingly independent and responsible learners.

Building Confidence

Throughout Year 2, pupils are gradually introduced to the routines and expectations of Prep School. They have opportunities to:

  • Visit Prep classrooms and learning spaces.
  • Meet their new teachers.
  • Take part in transition activities and lessons.
  • Become familiar with new subjects and specialist teaching.
  • Develop organisational skills and independence.

By the time they begin Year 3, children feel confident, prepared and excited for the next stage of their education.

Specialist Learning

Prep School opens up an even broader curriculum, with specialist teachers inspiring pupils across a range of subjects including Science, Computing, Languages, Music, Art, Drama and Sport.

Children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and develop a genuine love of learning while continuing to receive the individual attention Oakhyrst is known for.

Pastoral Care Remains at the Heart

Although pupils enjoy greater independence in Prep School, pastoral care remains central to everything we do. Form teachers and specialist staff work closely together to ensure every child feels supported, valued and encouraged to achieve their very best.

We continue to know every child as an individual, helping them build resilience, confidence and strong friendships as they grow.

New Opportunities

Prep School brings exciting opportunities to explore new interests and develop existing talents through:

  • Competitive sports and fixtures
  • Performing arts productions
  • Educational visits and residential trips
  • Leadership opportunities
  • School council and pupil voice
  • A wide range of clubs and enrichment activities

These experiences help children discover their strengths, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and create lasting memories.

Looking Ahead

As part of the award-winning Caterham Family of Schools, Oakhyrst Grange provides children with an excellent foundation for senior school and beyond. By the end of Prep School, our pupils are confident, curious and well prepared to embrace the next stage of their educational journey with enthusiasm and independence.
