Our approach to Inclusion, Support & Challenge ensures that every pupil is encouraged to participate fully in school life, supported when they need it and challenged to achieve their very best.

Our approach to wellbeing is captured through our Roots to Shoots to Mighty Oaks philosophy.

Just as a mighty oak needs strong roots, careful nurturing and space to grow, children need secure foundations from which they can develop confidence, independence and resilience.

We create strong foundations through positive relationships, a nurturing environment and a sense of belonging. Children know that there are trusted adults around them who will listen, notice and help.

As children grow, we help them develop the skills and strategies to understand themselves, manage challenges, build positive relationships and make healthy choices.

As pupils progress through Oakhyrst, they take increasing responsibility for their wellbeing, choices and relationships. We want them to leave us confident in their strengths, resilient in the face of challenges and excited about what comes next.

Supporting Every Child

Our support begins with knowing our pupils well. Our small-school environment allows staff to build strong relationships with children and recognise when they may need additional help or encouragement.

Support may include:

SEND support tailored to individual needs
Targeted interventions to address specific areas of learning
Pastoral and wellbeing support
Individual or small-group support
Personalised learning strategies
Support with friendships, confidence and emotional regulation
Reasonable adjustments where appropriate
Close partnership with parents and carers
Liaison with external professionals where needed

We use a graduated approach so that support can be adapted as a child’s needs develop:

Universal Support → Additional Support → Individualised Support

Our aim is always to provide the right support, at the right time.

Challenging Every Child

Inclusion is not simply about providing support. It is also about ensuring every child is encouraged to discover their potential.

We recognise that children flourish in different ways, so challenge may look different for every pupil. Through our broad curriculum, enrichment opportunities and personalised learning, we encourage children to:

think deeply and ask questions
develop their individual strengths
take on new challenges
become increasingly independent
develop leadership and responsibility
learn from mistakes and setbacks
discover new interests and talents
develop confidence and aspiration.

Whether a child needs additional support or greater academic challenge, we seek to understand where they are now and what their next step should be.

Wellbeing Every Day

Wellbeing is woven throughout life at Oakhyrst. It is not something that happens only when a child is struggling.

Through PSHE, Forest School, sport, outdoor learning, assemblies, clubs, enrichment and everyday relationships, children develop emotional literacy, resilience, healthy relationships and the confidence to ask for help.

Working Together

We believe children do best when school and home work together.

Parents and carers know their children best, and open communication helps us understand the whole child. We work closely with families to celebrate progress, identify concerns early and agree appropriate support when needed.

Where appropriate, we also work with external professionals to ensure that children receive the right expertise and support.

Growing Together

Every child’s journey is different. Some children need more support at particular points; others need greater challenge or encouragement to reach their potential.
