School LifePastoral Care

At Oakhyrst Grange School, exceptional pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children thrive when they feel safe, happy and valued, which is why creating a nurturing environment where every pupil is known as an individual is one of our highest priorities.

Our commitment to academic excellence is matched by our dedication to understanding each child personally. We take the time to know every pupil’s strengths, interests and aspirations, ensuring they feel heard, supported and encouraged throughout their journey with us.

A Caring Community

As a small school, we are proud of the close relationships that exist between pupils, staff and families. Every member of our team plays an important role in supporting children’s wellbeing, creating a genuine sense of belonging where every child feels confident to be themselves.

Our warm and inclusive community encourages kindness, respect and compassion. Older pupils naturally become role models for younger children, helping to create a family atmosphere where friendships flourish across year groups.

Supporting Every Child

We understand that every child is unique. Our dedicated staff work closely with families to ensure each pupil receives the support, encouragement and challenge they need to reach their full potential.

Whether celebrating achievements, helping children overcome challenges or building confidence in the classroom and beyond, we take a personalised approach that enables every child to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Wellbeing Matters

Children’s emotional wellbeing is fundamental to their success. Through our pastoral programme,’ Roots to Shoots to Mighty Oaks’, pupils develop the skills to:

  • Build positive friendships and relationships.
  • Develop resilience and confidence.
  • Understand and manage their emotions.
  • Show kindness, empathy and respect for others.
  • Make safe and responsible choices.
  • Become independent, reflective learners.

By fostering these qualities from an early age, we equip children with the confidence to embrace challenges and navigate an ever-changing world. Our dedicated Wellbeing room, ‘The Nook,’ provides a wonderful sensory, calm environment for all pupils to use.

Working in Partnership with Families

We believe that the strongest outcomes are achieved when school and home work together. Open communication and strong relationships with parents are central to our approach, ensuring families feel informed, supported and involved throughout their child’s education.

Our staff are always available to listen, offer guidance and celebrate each child’s achievements, creating a partnership built on trust, collaboration and shared aspirations.

A Place Where Every Child Belongs

Pastoral care at Oakhyrst Grange extends far beyond supporting children when they need help—it is woven into every aspect of school life. From the moment children join our community, they are welcomed into an environment where they are encouraged to be themselves, take risks in their learning and grow in confidence.

As part of the Caterham Family of Schools, we continue to build on our long-standing tradition of providing outstanding pastoral care, combining the warmth of our close-knit community with the strength, expertise and opportunities that come from being part of a wider family of schools.

At Oakhyrst Grange, every child is known, every voice is valued, and every pupil is encouraged to flourish.
