On Saturday 7th May, 5 children (Daisy O, Max M, Joseph L, Amala S, Emily S) took part in the South East Schools Divisional Relay Finals at Guildford Spectrum. This event was contested by schools that had qualified from the following counties: Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the channel Isles, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Sussex and Surrey.
With only 39 pupils in years 5 & 6, Oakhyrst Grange took part in the Small Schools category (up to 60 pupils, so we are one of the smallest schools competing.
We got off to a good start in the very first event, the Small Schools 4 x 25m Freestyle Relay, where we came third with a pb of 1.09.30 and qualified for the final. The events moved quickly and we were soon swimming in the final. We were up against some very strong teams and came in fifth overall with a time of 1.10.76.
After the excitement of the Freestyle Relay, we were then lined up for the heats of the Small Schools 4 x25m Medley Relay. We won our heat in a time of 1.19.29, but qualified third as two teams were quicker in the other heat. Everyone swam really well and we fought hard, but just missed out on third place in a time of 1.18.97 (Third place 1.18.36) narrowly missing out on a chance to represent the South East in the National English Schools final in Sheffield in June.
Well done to all our swimmers, I am super proud of you all and a big thank you to the parents for supporting the teams.
Mrs Michelle Evans
